Melaka has always been known as a great tourist hub, filled with culture and history; and now it has been recognised as the state which provides the most affordable housing in terms of pricing, by none other than the immediate Ex-Chief Minister of Melaka, Datuk Seri Idris Haron himself.
Idris stated that an affordable house in Melaka is priced at RM80, 000. That same type of house would cost RM240, 000 in one of the northern states. If the price were RM120, 000 in Melaka, it would be RM470, 000 in the northern states, while a RM250,000 house would cost RM700,000!.
He stated this citing a report entitled “Demystifying Affordable Housing Issue in Malaysia 2017”, in which the Khazanah Research Institute and the World Bank categorised Melaka as the most affordable housing provider in Malaysia.
There are, at present, many housing programs in Melaka like the people-friendly homes, housing for public sector employees or MGOHOME (Melaka Government Officers Home). Larger houses are also available and are sold at competitive prices that correspond with housing loan facilities, designed to attract government officers.
The administration of the state plans to build 58,000 units of affordable housing in Melaka. Out of this, 38,000 are already completed and the others are still in construction.
The Administration is committed to improving the housing status of the common man and therefore, Melaka Housing Board uses its surplus funds and profits to repair houses in kampong areas. This goes a long way to improving the welfare of the people.
On another note, a separate study was conducted by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development; it found that that families were the happiest in Melaka.
In the Malaysian Family Well-Being Index 2016 conducted by the National Population and Family Development Board, Melaka scored the highest result of 8.28 out of 10.
This governance exemplifies the basic fact that family well-being leads to better neighbourliness, leading to the well-being of the state as well as the country.
